Building Preview

The von Liebig Center for Science is an 88,230 square foot, 20 million dollar science facility located at Juniata College. Its classic brick facade and look fits perfectly within the historic campus architecture. Vast floor to floor heights combined with large common spaces produces an openness that promotes interaction and socializing between the biology and chemistry departments. Design Team - Owner: Juniata College - Civil Engineer: Keller Engineers - Structural Engineer: Fink, Roberts & Petrie, Inc. - M.E.P. Engineer: Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann Assoc. - Lab Consultant: Research Facilities Design - Architect: Hastings & Chivetta Architects, Inc.

Chemical Synthesis Lab

Characteristics Lab benches are located in the main floor area. Windows make up one wall. The remaining three walls are composed of fume hoods. Dimensions: 43’ x 27’

Lab Design 1 1 Compact T5 8W 12.25” x 4.5” x 1”

A suspended cable style troffer is mounted in the isles. Four Rows Five, four foot sections per row.

Current Power Density 2.7 W/ft 2 Projected Task: (60)(8W) = 480W Suspended: (20)(3Lamps)(28W) = 1680W 2160W/1161ft 2 = 1.9 W/ft 2

Lab Design 2 1 T5 28W 50” Length

A 2’x2’ grid pattern will replace the existing 2’x4’ grid. Four Rows Five per column 3 Lamp T8 48W input

Current Power Density 2.7 W/ft 2 Projected Task: (24)(28W) = 672W 2x2 Recessed: (20)(48W) = 960W 1632W/1161ft 2 = 1.4W/ft 2

Lecture Hall

Characteristics The ceiling is composed of a 2’x2’ grid incorporated into an architectural pattern. Windows. A series of white dry erase boards and a projector screen is located at the front. Dimensions: 56’x47’

Currently only two spot lights and four down lights shine upon the white boards.

Replacing the current system with a spotlight aimed at each of the sections below will create an even flow of light. MH 39W PAR20

Downlights The current downlights utilized are 150W incandescent. This can get costly when considering there are 70+ downlights within the lecture hall. Replacing these with a 50W compact fluorescent will drastically reduce the power density; yet still maintain a high illuminance level upon the desks.

Current Power Density 4.27 W/ft 2 Projected Marker Board: (8)(100W) = 800W Downlight: (75)(50W) = 3750W 4550W/2632ft 2 = 1.73W/ft 2

Front Elevation

Characteristics The architecture of the building is a rather simple brick face with asphalt shingles. Glass fiber reinforced columns compose the front main entryway. The windows and doors are aluminum and glass with a cast stone surrounding. A staircase on the side of the building utilizes a split-faced ashlar stone surface with a cast stone coping.

Current Conditions Lamp posts are along the walkways leading to the science center Six inch down lights are located over the main entry area.

The existing fixtures will remain. Yet improvements can be made A flush mounted up light will be placed in front of each of the four pillars.

The rest of the building will be lit via wide floods.
