Basic information ● on the southern hemisphere – the seasons are opposite to ours ● the driest continent ● the flattest continent ● host of the Olympic Games 2000 ● nickname: DOWN UNDER

History ● First inhabitants are called aborigines ● They arrived by watercraft ● They had complex structure including cave art still preserved today

History ● For Europeans Australia was discovered by James Cook in 1770 ● He claimed the land for King George III. And called it New South Wales (the east part)

History ● The whole are was a penal colony (for criminals) and from 1793 first free settlers came ● In 1901 six British colonies formed a federation

Government ● Australia is a constitutional monarchy ● The Queen who resides in the UK is represented by the Governor General ● Australia has 6 states and two territories
