November 2, 2015 Objective: I will define and use terms that describe the parts of a solution and the processes that take place when a solution is formed. Entry task: What does it mean when something dissolves. Answer using as much detail as possible Agenda: 1.Review Tests & Data 2.New Seats 3.Intro to Mixtures and Solutions a)Notes

Density Test Data Class Test Averages 1 st – 12.43/18 = 69.05% 3 rd – 11.92/18 = 66.22% 4 th – 14.09/18 = 78.28% 6 th – 11.71/18 = 65.05% Overall Class Averages 1 st – 78.69% 3 rd – 77.21% 4 th – 85.24% 6 th – 76.28%

Density Test Data A = 16.5 - 18 B = 14.5 - 16 C = 13 – 14 D = 11 – 12.5 E = ≥ 10.5

Density Test Data Grades: Total Test average (97 students) 70.01% Total Overall Average (108 students) 79.35%

Density Test Data 1 st Period Grade Distribution: 100% - 1 A – 1 B – 3 C – 7 D - 9 E - 6

Density Test Data 3rd Period Grade Distribution: 100% - 0 A – 0 B – 6 C – 3 D - 8 E - 7

Density Test Data 4th Period Grade Distribution: 100% - 3 A – 0 B – 10 C – 4 D – 3 E – 3

Density Test Data 6th Period Grade Distribution: 100% - 0 A – 2 B – 2 C – 5 D - 4 E - 8

Density Test Data Review Questions 6-9 (5pts)

Density Test Data Review Question 10 (4pts) Evaporation: Energy from the sun heats large bodies of water (lakes and oceans) Water changes from its liquid form to its gas form (water vapor) Rises into the atmosphere Condensation: As water vapor rises it cools Forms tiny droplets on dust or mineral particles in the air Accumulates to form clouds Precipitation: Droplets continue to form – clouds get bigger and heavier When the atmosphere cannot support the weight, the water falls back to earth (precipitation) Can be rain, snow, hail, or sleet Runoff: Liquid water flows down hill into creeks, streams, rivers, and lakes on its way back to the ocean Water may flow underground as groundwater

Density Test Data Review Question 11 (4pts) Kinetic (moving) Molecular Theory All matter consists of small particles (atoms) All particles are in constant motion If energy is added – particles speed up – Liquid or gas phase (depending on speed) If energy is removed – particles slow down – Liquid or solid (depending on speed) The temperature of an object is a measurement of the energy of it’s moving particles

Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Mixtures: A combination of 2 or more substances that are not chemically bonded. You can usually see the individual substances in the mixture. Ex. Pizza – bread, sauce, cheese, toppings, etc…

Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Mixtures: Substances can be physically separated. Ex. Pick toppings off a pizza Ex. Distillation (Separation of crude oil)

Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Solution: A mixture of 2 or more substances that appears to be a single substance. Particles of the mixed substances are evenly distributed.

Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Solution: Dissolving The process in which particles separate and spread evenly is known as dissolving.

Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Solution: Dissolving Solute: The substance that is dissolved in a solution ex. Sugar dissolving in water – sugar is a solute Solvent: The substance in which the solute dissolves. ex. Sugar dissolving in water – water is the solvent

Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Solution: Dissolving Concentration: A measurement of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent.

Mixtures, Solutions, & Solubility Solution: Dissolving Solubility: The amount of a solute needed to make a saturated solution. Expressed in grams/100mL Saturation: The maximum amount of solute a solvent can dissolve
