2 New England Colonies: Massachusetts  2 Permanent Colonies Started: Plymouth Colony & Massachusetts Bay Colony  Plymouth was founded in 1620 for religious freedom by John Carver and William Bradford.  Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded in 1630 by John Winthrop for religious freedom.  A Royal Colony.

3 New England Colonies: New Hampshire  Founded c. 1620, but independent from Massachusetts in 1679.  Founded for profit from trade and the fishing industry, by John Wheelwright, John Mason, Ferdinando Gorges and others.  A Royal Colony.

4 New England Colonies: Rhode Island  Founded in 1636.  Founded for Religious Freedom.  Founded by Roger Williams.  A Charter Colony

5 New England Colonies: Connecticut  Founded in 1635 by Thomas Hooker.  Founded for profit from fur trade and farming, as well as religious and political freedom.  A Charter Colony

6 Middle Colonies: New York  Founded in 1638 by Peter Minuit and other Dutch Settlers  Founded to expand trade for the Netherlands.  Surrendered to England in 1664, and the name of the colony changed from New Netherland to New York.  A Royal Colony.

7 Middle Colonies: Delaware  Founded in 1638 by Peter Minuit and Dutch and Swedish Settlers.  Founded for the expansion of trade for Holland and Sweden.  Once called New Sweden.  A Proprietary Colony.

8 Middle Colonies: New Jersey  Founded in 1638 by John Berkeley and George Carteret  Founded to Profit from selling land.  A Royal Colony

9 Middle Colonies: Pennsylvania  Founded in 1682 by William Penn.  Founded for the profit of selling land and religious freedom.  A Proprietary Colony

10 Southern Colonies: Maryland  Founded in 1634 by Cecil Calvert.  Founded for profit from selling land and religious freedom.  A Proprietary Colony.

11 Southern Colonies: Virginia  Founded in 1607 by John Smith.  Founded to expand English Trade.  First settlement was Jamestown.  A Royal Colony

12 Southern Colonies: North Carolina  Founded in the 1660’s by a group of 8 English Aristocrats.  Founded to profit from trade, and the selling of land.  A Royal Colony

13 Southern Colonies: South Carolina  Founded in 1670 by a group of 8 English Aristocrats.  Founded to profit from trade, and the selling of land.  A Royal Colony

14 Southern Colonies: Georgia  Founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe  Founded for protection against the Spanish, religious freedom, and as a safe haven for debtors.  A Royal Colony.
