2 What is Virginia’s place in the world?

3 Virginia’s Exports o In 2013, Virginia exported over $15.2 billion in manufactured goods, which accounted for approximately 84 percent of Virginia’s total exports. The top five subsectors for manufactured goods exports included: industrial machinery, electrical machinery, plastics, vehicles (not railway), and aircraft & spacecraft. o Over 78% of Virginia’s agricultural exports in 2013 were comprised of soybeans, animal feed, meats, and unprocessed tobacco. In 2013, the top five export destinations of agricultural products via Virginia were China, Canada, Russia, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia. o In 2013, mineral fuel (coal and petroleum products) exports decreased from $533 million to $251 million. The top three markets for mineral fuel were Canada, Netherlands, and Mexico. Combined, these three countries accounted for slightly more than 79% of the mineral fuel export market for Virginia.

5 United States Role in the World o Top 5 Products exported by The United States: Cars (4.4%), Refined Petroleum (4.2%), Planes, Helicopters, and/or Spacecraft (3.2%), Packaged Medicaments (3.1%), and Gas Turbines (2.4%). o Top 5 Export destinations of The United States: Canada (13%), Mexico (11%), China (9.3%), Japan (5.5%), and Germany (4.9%). o Global power o Strong military

7 Rights v. Responsibilities What is a right? *something that a person is or should be morally or legally allowed to have, get, or do What is a responsibility? *something that you should do because it is morally right, legally required, etc.

8 Rights & Responsibilities What are some rights we have as United States citizens? What are some responsibilities we have as United States citizens?

9 The United States Constitution o Amendment 1: freedoms of religion, speech, and press o Amendment 2: the right to bear arms, or own guns o Amendment 3: prevents the government from forcing citizens to shelter soldiers in their homes. o Amendment 4: prevents, unnecessary or unreasonable searches of a person's property o Amendment 5: all Americans are guaranteed the right to a fair and legal trial

10 The United States Constitution o Amendment 6: right to a speedy trial o Amendment 7: the right to a trial by jury in civil, or private, legal cases where damages are more than $20 o Amendment 8: prohibits cruel and unusual punishment o Amendment 9: recognizes that Americans have rights that are not listed in the Constitution o Amendment 10: the powers not given to the United States government by the Constitution belong to the states or to the people.

15 After your Unit 1 Test o Finish all group work and hand in. o Read pages 4-10 in your textbook and define all of the vocabulary words. o If you do not finish either of the 2 they are due on Thursday (A Day) or Friday (B Day)
