2 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Objectives After this session, the students are expected to be able : 1.To explain safe protection at laboratory 2.To explain safety precautions 3.To explain sources of accidents at laboratory

3 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Self protection  Caution : The first rule of self-protection is to be alert at all times

4 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Self protection Protect your eyes * Safety glasses should be worn at all times in the chemical laboratory You have only one pair of eyes; protect them !

5 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Self protection Protect your body:  Wear laboratory coat or aprons & safety shoes  Never wear open shoes or canvas shoes, keep ties or scarves secured with fasteners  Do not wear medallions or hanging objects  Tie long hair up out of the way  Avoid flammable clothing

6 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Self protection  Handle fire with care  All burner should be placed safety away from all flammable materials FIRE

7 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Corrosive liquids  Handle chemicals carefully, so that none comes in contact with skin (use gloves)  When pouring corrosive liquids, avoid spillage and avoid contact with the liquid that runs down the neck of the bottle

8 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Volatile liquids and Gas  Never inhale volatile liquids and gases  When odors are to be observed, sniff a small portion by holding the container away from your nose and fanning a small amount toward you with your hand

9 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Chemicals  Always recheck the label of the chemical you are using  Use the wrong chemical can cause an explosion or a ruined determination

10 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Disposal of Waste * When you have completed procedures and reaction, you will have residues, slurries (water mixtures of insoluble matter, precipitates, pigments, etc) and waste solution which must be disposed of *

11 Teknologi dan Rekayasa CAUTION  Do not pour concentrated acids, bases or slurries into your sink without considering what you are doing. Think first !

12 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Acids or bases solution wastes  Pour into your waste-disposal sink while running water continuously from the faucet to dilute the acid or base  When you have finished pouring the waste into the sink, flush with large volumes of water to dilute any corrosive effect

13 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Organic wastes residues:  These are insoluble in water  Discard the bulk of the residues in a waste-disposal safety container  Discard all volatile solvents into a waste-solvent receptacle which will contain the vapors and will not constitute a fire hazard

14 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Volatile solvents  Volatile solvents are those solvents which vaporize readily at relatively low temperature  The vapors which result can be toxic, irritating, flammable or can have unpleasant side effects

15 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Caution  Avoid indiscriminate disposal of wastes  Always consider the possibility of spontaneous reactions, explosion, and fire  Waste receptacles are usually designed as to what should be put into them

16 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Safety precautions  Never heat a graduated cylinder or bottle  Never pour water into acid the heat generated may spatter the mixture or break the glass  Always pour acid into water slowly and stir constantly  Always wrap your hand in a towel when putting a glass tube into a stopper

17 Teknologi dan Rekayasa Conclusion  Efficiency might be synonymous with service  When efficiency is guaranteed, good service is a natural occurrence
