Definition When someone has dexterity they are skilled with using their hands to perform tasks, such as playing video games or playing a stringed instrument.

Further in Context In the story, the author is discussing how Thomas Forten was employed as a sail-maker, which is a difficult job. To perform the job of sail- making, the worker must work with heavy cloth and thick thread so that the sails are strong. To create sails they must use skillful hands to complete the job because the thread is heavy and when handled with inexperienced hands, the person can hurt their hands severely by cutting them.
