2 Verbs – Every sentence must have a verb! All kinds of verbs are marked with a double underline. Two main kinds – Action and Linking Action verbs show some kind of action – Action verbs can be happening now (present tense), already happened (past tense), or they will happen (future tense). Depending on the verb tense, a helping verb may be needed. Examples of action verbs – skipped, ate, singing, made, peeled, studying, kicked, vote, combed …….. Some of these verbs may need helping verbs – was singing, are studying, had kicked, may vote, has combed….. Helping verbs – am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been, have, has, had, do, does, did, may, might, must, can, could, shall, will, should, would

3 pron pron She was running a race on Saturday. The lamps and rugs are shipping from Dallas on Monday. I am planning a party for my mother’s birthday. The class can finish the testing after PE and lunch.

4 Linking verbs do not show action, but are used to “link” words that come after it back to the subject. Note that some of the linking verbs are also helping verbs. Linking verbs – am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been (all of these can be helping verbs also) Other linking verbs are - feel, smell, taste, sound, look, seems, becomes. The juicy burger was delicious. The winter weather is windy and cold. After the ballgame, we were excited with the score. Mr. Pringle is the football coach. pron These linking verbs link a descriptive word in the “verb” part of the sentence back to the subject. - delicious describes hamburger - windy and cold describe weather - excited describes we - coach renames/ describes Mr. Pringle
