Compose Two- Dimensional Shapes Unit of Study: Two-Dimensional Geometry Global Concept Guide: 2 of 4
2
Content Development An effective way to teach composing two-dimensional shapes is to let students explore and experiment. Give students the opportunity to use manipulatives such as pattern blocks and tangrams each day. As students combine shapes, have them record their findings and look for relationships among shapes.
3
Content Development Some students may not understand that shapes may need to be turned over and around to make a new shape. Students may not yet understand that the position of the shape does not define the shape. Help students understand that a shape is the same despite its orientation. Real World Connection: Have students consider careers that may need to compose shapes. For example, Architects must be able to put together shapes in order to create plans for buildings.
4
Day 1 The first day of Composing Two-Dimensional Shapes should be used for basic hands-on exploration of combining two dimensional shapes with various manipulatives. Have students record their findings in a journal. Go Math Lesson 12.3 can be used to help facilitate student exploration. Make sure students have the pattern blocks in addition to the book.

Day 2 The Voyages Gr. 1 Excursions Lesson: Making PicturesMaking Pictures Student Activities: Picture, Picture, Where is the Picture? (Excursions SE p. 77, 79) Build a Picture (Excursions SE, p. 80)Picture, Picture, Where is the Picture?Build a Picture will help continue student exploration of composing 2D shapes. Portions of Go Math Lesson 12.4 can also be used to strengthen understanding. Students should still be using concrete manipulatives on day 2, younger children do not have the spatial reasoning necessary to mentally visualize the combinations they are making.
6
Day 3 Portions of Go Math Lesson 12.5, along with pattern blocks, can be used to continue developing student understanding of composing 2D shapes Encourage students to compare their newly composed shapes to objects in the real world By day 3, students should be able to draw representations of their combined shapes and encouraged to combine shapes by drawing pictures without using manipulatives first. Students could explore composing 2D shapes on the computer with the Illumination activities listed in the GCG

Enrich/Reteach/Intervention Enrich: An quick way to Enrich when composing 2D shapes is to challenge the student to create a specific shape or 2D figure Go Math Grade 1Enrich 12.5 (p. E95) Intervention/Small Group: Go Math Grade 1 Reteach 12.3 (p. R93) Go Math Grade One Tier 2 (TE 493B) could be used as a small group activity
