2 Do Now  What do you think is the difference between Social Studies and History?  Take 2 minutes to write some thoughts on the differences

3 The Difference  Social Studies: aspects of branches of the study of human history  Studying societies, how people/races/tribes lived  What drove them to fight, what brought them together  History: Study of the past events, particularly in human affairs  FACTS: Who won wars, what battles took place, etc.  *History tells you what happened, social studies shows you the effect it had on people *

4 Why are only certain people studied?  Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant  Michelangelo, Picasso, Van Gogh  Michael Phelps, Simone Biles  Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh

5 How to get Remembered in History  Do something historic  Change the way something is being done  Shape the future of a certain idea/practice  What is something you can change/do to be remembered?

6 Adapting to the Environment Colder Areas  Shelter: igloos  Food: Caribou, sea mammals Warmer Areas  Shelter: huts, tents  Food: Deer, bears, fish, crops

7 Cultures of Indians  Lived in the same types of shelter  Two examples: igloos, teepees  Cultural Region : people speak same language, way of life

8 What they believed…  Great Spirit had a life force  EVERYTHING had a spirit  Lived in communities, didn’t fight over land  Believed in not wasting anything from nature

9 The Northwest Coast Indians  Found food in sea and the forests  Lived near the beaches and forests  Used different weapons for different animals  Made mostly everything from tree bark

10 California Indians  Lived by the coast foothills, deserts, and mountains  Ate salmon, shellfish, deer, fruits, and acorns  Lived in cone-shaped homes made of bark  Made skirts form grass and animal fur. Made baskets from plants  Used antlers, baskets and fish traps

11 Great Basin Indians  Lived by desert, grasses, pinon trees, and sagebush  Ate ducks, insects, plants, berries, rabbits  Lived in willow-pole houses covered with brush or plants  Made clothes from rabbits, and baskets from trees  Used baskets, nets, decoys, sharp sticks

12 Plateau Indians  Lived by mountains, forests, grasses, sagebrush  Ate salmon, onions, carrots, camas, antelope, deer  Lived in underground homes made of logs, mud and reeds  Made clothing from animals, used shells as decorations  Used nets, spears and digging sticks to catch fish
