44% 4% 12% 1.What was the most popular pet in this survey? 2.What was the least popular pet in the survey? 3.How much more popular was the Cat than the “Other” category?

Data: pieces of information that are collected are called data. We collect data by conducting surveys, observations, interviews, and polls, as well as filling out questionnaires and tally sheets. Once we have collected our data, we can represent and organize it in different formats to make it easier to analyze and interpret. We can use different types of graphs to display data.
5
Bar Graphs are good to use to make comparisons between two or more things.
6
What is the title of this graph? Are the axis labeled? What questions can you answer from this graph?
7
Line graphs show changes over time
8
What is the title of this graph? What is the x axis labeled? What is the y axis labeled? What can you answer from this graph? When else would you use a line graph? Line graphs cont.

Circle graphs are used to display data that is part of a whole, or any percentage data. The percentages in a circle graph always add up to 100% Circle graphs can be used to tell how parts relate to a whole. For example, we could draw a circle graph to show how we spend our day or our allowance.
10
Step 1: Find out how many items make up the whole Step 2: Look for parts of the graph you already know- like 1/2 88 students were asked their favorite color Find out what half of 88 is …….½ x 88
11
The next easiest part of a circle graph to find is half of a half, or ¼ Then 1/8 is half of 1/4 Find out what ¼ of the whole is ……¼ x 88 1/8 x 88
12
You will need to learn to create a circle graph, examine the data on the following page
13
Brand NameNumber Sold Adidas150 Nike192 Reebok60 Asics108 Other90 Sneakers Sold in 1997 at Footlocker By looking at the table we can see that Nike and Adidas have the largest sectors of sneaker sales, but constructing a circle graph would help us to view this quickly. To create a circle graph we need to determine the following:
14
Brand NameNumber Sold Adidas150 Nike50 Reebok25 Asics12 Other12 1.What is the "whole." 2.How many different parts, or groups, are there. 3.What percentage does each part, or data group, have of the whole
15
Brand Name Number Sold Adidas150 Nike192 Reebok60 Asics108 Other90 How many groups are there? What percentage is each group?
16
Draw a circle and draw in a sector for each data group. Try to make the sector sizes look as close to the percentage of the circle as the percentage of the data group.
17
To find the percent of a number change the percent to a decimal Then multiply that decimal by the total number 33% =.33 33% of 66.33 x 66
18
1. Find 23 % of 56 2. Find 13 % of 89 3. Find 42% of 68
19
Create a bar graph from the following data 86 students were polled.
22
Step 1: Find the total number of people polled or surveyed Step 2: Find the percent of the whole for each type- change the fraction to a percent
24
The results of a survey of sixth grade students indicated that 34% preferred math, 23% preferred science, 18% preferred social studies, and 15% preferred language arts. All other students either did not have a favorite subject or picked a connections/elective class. Which type of data display would be MOST appropriate for showing the data? A. bar graph B. circle graph C. histogram D. pictograph
25
1. To compare the grades in Mrs. Belcher’s math class to the grades in Mrs. Holmes’ math class 2. To show the percentages of students who completed their homework 3. To show the high temperature for the months of January-May
