How it Happens Floods happen when there is heavy rain. Floods also happen by hurricanes.

What Season do they Occur Many floods occur in the spring when snow is melting. Also when it rains a lot. There are also floods in fall. There are also floods when tropical storms account for huge amounts of rain.

How long does it last Floods have no set of time to last. Floods can’t go away if the ground is moist. The ground has to dry out in order to soak up more of the water. Floods can last anywhere from a few hours to many weeks.

How often do they occur It depends on the area and on how much rain the area gets and other things. For example an area in Death Valley probably wouldn’t get floods very often. Places that get a lot of rain and are close to a river would have floods more often.

Damage Floods can destroy everything like houses, buildings, and they can take away hot water. It can also destroy electrical boxes, crops, and they can even destroy families. The reason they destroy families is because floods can kill over 100 people.

Precautions Do you want to know how to survive a flood? Well, you have to create a disaster pack to keep at home, or to take along if you need to evacuate. Include enough food and bottled water three days. The American Red Cross thinks a gallon per person per day would be fine. Food should be able to be at room temperature. Don’t wait for bad weather to arrive. Make sure you have everything you need before you need it.
