INPUT of ISN: What do you think? Scenario T/F? Explain your thinking. 1. Energy is synonymous to force. 2. Only living things have energy. 3. Energy is only associated with moving things. 4. Energy is a fuel. 5. An ice cream cone does not have heat. 6. Your mom might say, “Close the fridge. You’re letting all the cold air out.” Is your mom correct? 7. A black sweater will warm you up faster. 8. If you unplug your appliances that are not in use (like a coffee maker or a toaster oven), then you will conserve energy. 9. If a flashlight is not turned on, then the battery will last longer. 10. The electricity that flows through wires is supplied by batteries or generators, etc.

Output of ISN Scenario T/F? REFINE YOUR THINKING.

1. Energy is synonymous to force. F Forces act outside an object. Energy is something objects possess. 2. Only living things have energy. F Living things have energy, but so do non-living things. For example, wind is non-living and has kinetic energy. 3. Energy is only associated with moving things. F Kinetic energy is the form of energy associated only with moving things. Potential energy is the form of energy associated with non-moving things. 4. Energy is a fuel. F Fuel is a source of energy but in itself not energy. Fuel is a resource. For example, coal, natural gas, or food. 5. An ice cream cone does not have heat. FHeat is the transfer of thermal energy. All matter can transfer thermal energy if there is a difference in amounts of thermal energy.

Scenario T/F? REFINE YOUR THINKING. 6. Your mom might say, “Close the fridge. You’re letting all the cold air out.” Is your mom correct? ? To some extent your mom could be correct. However, we know that thermal energy moves from hot to cold. So if there is more thermal energy outside the fridge, then technically you are pushing the hot air in, which pushes the cold air out. 7. A black sweater will warm you up faster. F Any sweater serves as an insulator, meaning it prevents the flow of thermal energy. A black sweater will do this no better or worse than any other sweater. A black sweater will absorb more heat. However, there is no conclusive evidence that this warms you any faster than a lighter color. 8. If you unplug your appliances that are not in use (like a coffee maker or a toaster oven), then you will conserve energy. ? It depends on how you are defining conservation. 9. If a flashlight is not turned on, then the battery will last longer. F The chemicals stored in the battery serve to pump electrons. Therefore, the battery will last as long as long as the chemicals will last. 10. The electricity that flows through wires is supplied by batteries or generators, etc. The electric current on wires is a flow of electrons. These electrons are not supplied by batteries or generators. Batteries and generators merely pump them.
