3 Training PDP – ESR summary document – Reference for training context Provides overview of…. – Aims/context of the network – Reference skills list – Network training programme – Communication and public engagement strategy – Personal career Development Plan (PDP)

4 COORDINATED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELDMSCA-ITN-2014-ETN Researcher Skills: Complementary Research & Project Management Experience: Working with senior scientists from Academic /non-Academic organisations. Scientific networking/science communication to specialists / non-specialists. Enterprise start-up, task co-ordination, organisation of network events. Management: Effective project and research management. Management techniques; delegation, risk assessment. Team working: managing roles and expectations. Challenges/benefits of collaborative research. Networking in industry and research. How to become a more effective researcher through management of the PhD (and the supervisor!). Governance: Ethical issues, procedures and practice. All ESRs will be confronted with issues surrounding patient data and ethical approvals. Ethics procedures will be explained, some ESRs will write an ethics application, submitted to the appropriate board. Communication Skills/Personal Effectiveness Presentation: Public speaking/effective presentations/AV aids, Communication: Developing/delivering scientific critiques, publication ethics (authorship/copyright) Grant Writing: Issues surrounding grant writing, definition of research questions, identification of state-of-the-art and requirements for future research. What makes a successful proposal? Career Management Job Interviews: Career paths/preparing for them. CV skills and maximising performance at interview. Awareness of (non-)academic recruitment/selection practices. Career Planning: Career planning/raising research profile/developing relevant experience.. Selling yourself – developing an effective personal portfolio. IPR/Commercial Exploitation of Results/ Entrepreneurship Commercialisation of novel ideas: from vision > business-plan. Understanding IP, raising finance, effective Marketing and Sales.
