Notes 1.1

Why Measure?  To determine exact placement of evidence  To determine relationships among pieces of evidence  To analyze trends or features in the evidence  For later reference or reconstruction of the crime scene

Why Metric? Why British Imperial? Who cares?  There is only one unit of measurement for each quantity in the metric system– there are not multiple units to measure length (feet, leagues, furlongs, miles, nautical miles, etc….) as in our use of British Imperial Units. How many can you recall?  The prefix shows the scale (magnitude) of the measurement - combinations of prefix and unit make for a wide range of combinations  It is a decimal system - allows unit conversion without doing fractional conversions - simply by shifts of the decimal point. What does deci mean?

When taking Measurements…  You Must be accurate How close you are to the true measurement.  You Must be precise Your ability to keep coming up with the same measurement again and again.  Accuracy and Precision depend on… Both the measurement tool and the operator

Metric Prefixes (any others you know?)  K – Kilo1000  H – Hecto100  D – Deka10  the base unit (meter, liter, or gram)  d – deci1/10  c – centi1/100  m – milli1/1000  µ - micro1/1000000

Length Area  Derived Unit Square meter L x W (2-D) Square centimeter  Tools Ruler Caliper Calculator Base Unit  meter Tools  Ruler  Caliper

Linear Volume Liquid Volume  Derived Unit Cubic meter LxWxH (3-D) Cubic centimeter  Tools Ruler Caliper calculator Base Unit  Liter Tools  Graduated cylinder  Syringe  Pipette

Mass Temperature  Base Unit gram  Tools Triple beam balance Analytical balance Base Unit  Celsius degree Tools  thermometer

How to Convert….. K (unit) H (unit) D (unit) (base unit) d (unit) c (unit) m (unit) If you’re moving up, move the decimal point to the left If you’re moving down, move the decimal point to the right

Practice Problems/Conversions  5 o 40’ + 10 o 32’ = ______  8’8” + 4’7” = ______  Convert 758.32 cm to Km  Convert 12m to mm  Convert 0.0053 Km to cm  Convert 23.92 Hg to mg
