3. Affluence: Rich vs Poor States Why are some countries rich while others are poor? That is certainly an interesting question. If we want to be able to answer it, we first need to know the criteria that would allow us to objectively assess the affluence of a country Gross Domestic Product = GDP Gross domestic product = the market value of all final goods and services produced in a country in a given period.
