Epidermis - outermost layer of skin. Dermis - deeper functional layer of skin. Keratin - Strong flexible protein in skin, hair & nails. Melanin - pigment that gives skin its color and shields skin from ultraviolet rays. (sunlight) Collagen - flexible protein fibers that make the skin elastic. What causes acne ? Over active Sebaceous Glands. Pores of skin become clogged with oil. Hormones make sebaceous glands produce more oil which clog the skin. Sebaceous Glands - glands in the skin that add oil to the skin and hair shaft. Treatments for acne 1. Acutane (internal) 2. Retin “A” (external). 3. Antibiotics 4. Over the counter preparations such as Proactive, Clearasil, Neutrogena, & etc... 5. Skin Doctor -Dermatologist

Nerves - bundles of tissue that carry signals from one place to another. CNS (Central Nervous System) - made up of the Brain and Spinal Cord. Neurons - nerve cells made up of a cell body, dendrites which receive signals and axons which carry signals to the next cell. Neurotransmitters - chemicals released at the end of axons and move across the synaptic cleft and bind to receptors of the next cell. (pg. 517)
