3 Types of Lines TYPES OF LINES IMPLIED LINE Created by positioning a series of points so that the eye tends to automatically conconnect them—not actually drawn! ACTUAL LINE May vary greatly in weight and character -BASIC LINES -Expressive Lines -Descriptive Lines By using the various types of lines, artists have the potential to lead a viewer’s eye through a composition.

5 VARIATIONS OF LINE QUALITY With the combination of various line types, a multitude of possible effects can be created.

6 Lines that communicate ideas & moods. ACTUAL LINE EXPRESSIVE LINES What do you feel when you see vertical lines used in an artwork? How about this one? Horizontal Lines? Curved & Zig- Zag?

7 Vertical Lines stability and strength Horizontal Lines calm and peaceful Diagonal Lines instability, tension, excitement Curved Lines change of direction and expresses activity Zig-Zag Lines uneasiness and confusion

9 Outline: line that shows of creates the outer edge of a shape. ACTUAL LINE DESCRIPTIVE LINES Blind Contour: lines that are drawn by only looking at the object, not the paper. Contour: line that defines the edges and surface ridges of an object. Gesture: lines with expressive movement.

10 Types of Implied Line IMPLIED LINE EDGE No line is actually drawn, but a line is created where to two shapes/values meet. Closure The tendency to close up shapes or forms by seeing lines that do not exist. Line of sight The implied lines suggested by the direction in which figures in a picture are looking.
