ICS Day, an annual student festival, includes games, coding competitions, corporate outreach booths, free food, a dunk tank and live entertainment by UCI dance crews. Google and Blizzard are regular visitors to Bren Hall, hosting tech talks and career workshops, as well as helping to sponsor events hosted by student organizations. Amazon is currently expanding its offices in Irvine, growing its smartphone, tablet, and gaming technologies. Josh Tanenbaum runs The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is the world's largest game jam event (game creation) taking place around the world at physical locations. Think of it as a hackathon focused on game development. It is the growth of an idea that in today’s heavily connected world, we could come together, be creative, share experiences and express ourselves in a multitude of ways using video games – it is very universal. The weekend stirs a global creative buzz in games, while at the same time exploring the process of development, be it programming, iterative design, narrative exploration or artistic expression. It is all condensed into a 48 hour development cycle. The GGJ encourages people with all kinds of backgrounds to participate and contribute to this global spread of game development and creativity

The change of major policies for the following majors have been updated: Computer Game Science Computer Science Informatics Software Engineering Changes includes updates to: GPA and course criteria, unit caps (60 or 90 units), and school expectations of applicants It is highly unlikely that a student will be granted any exceptions to the change of major policy.

What are we looking for? –One year of Computing/Computer Science 1 programming language course and 1 higher level computing course is strongly preferred, if not 2 programming language courses Higher level of Computing is great! –Data Structures, Advanced Data Structures –Assembly Language Programming Languages –Python, C++, or Java (in that order) –No Visual Basic, C, C# –Please do not admit this combo: »1 Intro to CS and 1 programming class. »They will be here at UCI for 3+ years and start from the beginning of the curriculum. »This would place them at a great financial disadvantage and in classes with freshmen. –It is best to admit students with multiple programming courses in C++ and data structures. –AP Computer Science does not count as a class –One year of Mathematics Calculus for all majors, except Informatics Linear algebra, discrete math or boolean algebra are excellent substitutes –For Informatics, one semester of Mathematics Prefer Statistics or Boolean Algebra

Staff questions regarding exceptions to policy, an admissions decision about applicants, or other administrative questions about our program: Contact Neha Rawal, Associate Director for Student Affairs: –neha@ics.uci.eduneha@ics.uci.edu –(949) 824-5884 (direct, private line) –(949) 824-5156 (public line) –If Neha is not available, please contact Kris Bolcer, Director of ICS Student Affairs, at kris@ics.uci.edu, (949) 824-2277 (direct, private line) All inquiries are sent to Neha and not other ICS academic counselors

Exceptions to policy for Transfers: –C in ANY required course, student will not be granted exception Decision comes directly from ICS Associate Dean, along with these guidelines: –Student may not be admitted into our majors or allowed into summer orientation if they do not meet admissions criteria; offer must be rescinded. –Summer courses may not be used for exception review –Informatics may not be used as a change of major »Students really don’t want it and repeatedly ask advising staff for change of major back into their first major of choice »Students do not make satisfactory progress toward this degree while incurring financial debt In reviewing disqualifications, ICS Student Affairs noticed a pattern. Students who are weak in math did not do well in our majors.
