Welcome International students ! Creighton Student Employment Office Harper Center Room 2054 Therese McGrath 402.280.2457 www.Creighton.edu/studentemployment

Where you can work If you are here under an F1 or J1 student visa, you are limited to on campus work (unless you have been granted off campus authorization by the Office of Global engagement.) You can work for any Creighton department and also for Follett bookstore and SODEXO food service. You are limited to work no more than 20 hours per week, all campus jobs combined. You can work up to 40 hours per week when your classes are not in session, such as Fall and Spring breaks, Winter and Summer breaks.

Student status You must be enrolled at least ½ time in your program of study to work on campus. If you are working in the summer, you must plan to be enrolled at least ½ time Fall semester.

Steps for employment Start your job hunt by going to these 3 sources: – CU Student Employment site lists our top hiring departments and whom to contact. creighton.edu/studentemployment/cudepartments/ – Creighton Career Services site is mostly off campus listings, but does have an on-campus job category. creighton.edu/careercenter/jobs4jays/ – CU Human Resources lists mostly career positions but does have a CU student category. creighton.edu/hr/careers

step When you are hired you will get a notification from the Student Employment Office regarding forms you need to fill out. Go to Human Resources on campus and complete your – Federal I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form – W4 tax form – direct deposit for paychecks Bring your passport, your I-20 and your I-94. Also bring your banking information. HR is located next to Public Safety on the NE corner of 23 and Burt St.

This mandatory form is referred to as the I-9. The Federal government mandates that all new employees must prove to their employer that they are legally eligible to work in the US. Here at Creighton, you will complete the form on-line and documents are shown in person to a designated Creighton staff member. The form must be completed before you can start work. Federal Employment Eligibility Verification Form 7

You enter simple information and it only takes a few minutes to complete. The key to the process is having the proper identification to show the authorized Creighton staff member. The government is very strict about what documents can be accepted. They must be original and unexpired. Photocopies, scans and faxes cannot be accepted. We have to swear we have witnessed originals! 9 The list on this page outlines the documents that can be accepted. List A stands alone. Lists B and C must be presented in combination. 9

forms Go here for links to download your I- 94 and your letter for obtaining your social security number. creighton.edu/studentemployment/internationalstudents/

When you are first hired, Creighton will require you to complete a Federal W4 form for income tax withholding. Your earnings here are taxable. Students can find the instructions confusing. You may want to consult Creighton’s office of Global Engagement or Human Resources about how many allowances you wish to claim. We can’t give tax advice. It is your decision and it can be updated during the year if needed. W4 Tax Withholding Form 11

We recommend that you fill out a Direct Deposit form for your paychecks. Your checks will go directly to your bank account. This is a much more convenient and safe way to get paid. It means you won’t have to walk down to Human Resources to pick up your checks every other Friday. Direct Deposit 12 You can use any banking institution including credit unions. We need a voided check, or your bank routing number and your account number. If we don’t have a voided check, the first check will be pre-noted and you will be issued a physical check. These can be picked up in Human Resources (2222 Burt Street). View your paystubs online through the HR self service website. http://www.creighton.edu/hr/selfservice/ http://www.creighton.edu/hr/selfservice/
