“America Stretches Its Wings” History Alive p. 400 – 401 Hawaii and Alaska Step 1: Read the section and complete questions #1 – 5. 1.Few thought it was a good idea because it was a vast wilderness. 2.Turns out, most Americans were wrong. Alaska had thick forests, fish, wildlife and mild coastal climates. Gold, copper, coal and other minerals were discovered there. 3.Missionaries wanted to convert native Hawaiians to Christianity. The US wanted to establish sugar plantations. 4.Sugar growers in the US received a bonus. Hawaiian planters wanted that bonus too so they asked the US to annex them. 5.Native Hawaiians resented being pushed around by Americans. President Cleveland refused to annex Hawaii, “Hawaii should be ruled by Hawaiians. President McKinley annexed Hawaii in 1898.

“A Splendid Little War” The Spanish-American War Cuba 1.Define Yellow Journalism – journalism that exaggerated news events to sell millions of copies of newspapers 2.Sketch a picture definition of yellow journalism. 3.Read the article, “Yellow Journalism and the Spanish American War”. Answer Questions 1 through 3 plus write a newspaper headline. 1.Yellow journalism was used to sell newspapers. 2.They blamed the Spanish for the sinking of the Maine even though there was no evidence to support this theory. 2a. This caused Americans to want to get involved with Cuba. 3. A headline in the style of yellow journalism includes large, dramatic and misleading phrases.

“A Splendid Little War” The Spanish American War Cubans Struggle for Independence Headline: Spain allows Cubans to Perish due to Outrageous Conditions 1.Men, women & children were herded into concentration camps. 2.Many forced to live with inadequate food, beds, toilets & medical care. 3.Tens of thousands die. The Spanish-American War Headline: America Rescues Cuba 1.Cuba gained independence. 2.Puerto Rico came under American rule. 3.The US agreed to remove all of its troops from Cuba but could return if needed to preserve law and order and defend independence.

The Filipinos issued a declaration of independence, formed a national government and a national flag. 3. America stood for freedom from oppressive governments but America would not grant the Philippines their freedom/independence

The Panama Canal Use History Alive p. 405 – 406 to gather information about the Panama Canal. 1.“Dreaming of a Canal” The Panama Canal is an example of imperialism because the US tried to take advantage of a weaker country’s resources. Columbia refused to sell Panama to the United States so Roosevelt sent an American warship to Panama. Panama won its independence from Columbia and allowed the US to control the canal for $10 million. 2.“Building ‘the Big Ditch’” Main Idea: Building the Panama Canal was no easy task. Evidence 1: Conditions were terrible. They bathed, washed and drank with the same water. Evidence 2: Yellow fever and mosquitoes were a big problem. They used millions of dynamite to blast apart mountains.
