IN SUPPORT OF ADDING LANGUAGE TO DEGREE PLANS PERTAINING TO STUDY ABROAD Senate Resolution 1014

Background The opportunity exists for students to plan study abroad experiences in which they can obtain degree specific, university core, and elective course credit. Degree Plans across the University of Texas do not note the ability of students to earn course credit abroad. Students are deterred from study abroad due to the misconception that courses taken abroad will not count for degree requirements.

Background Students are encouraged to study abroad as a way to complement their degree plan. The University takes pride in its Study Abroad Office and has been ranked “third in the number of students who study abroad”.

Purpose To raise awareness about the opportunities that students have to gain course credit abroad. To provide students with more resources to consult for academic planning. To further promote and improve the study abroad program at the University.

Resolved Summary That phrasing be added to all degree plans stating the ability of students to gain degree specific, university core, and elective course credit. That the phrasing be, as per recommendations of the Study Abroad office: “Degree requirements can be fulfilled through study abroad participation. For more information: http://www.utexas.edu/student/abroad.” http://www.utexas.edu/student/abroad That the Academic Enrichment Committee work with advisors to appropriately integrate this phrasing into the advisor’s respective college.
