1 Referencing - ACKNOWLEDGING INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY (BIBLIOGRAPHY AND CITATIONS)

2 Why reference?  There are many different resources used when writing essays or researching a topic. When you use information, ideas and quotes gathered from these resources, you must acknowledge where the information came from in the form of a bibliography A bibliography is a detailed list of the resources used in an essay or research topic. The reasons for listing or 'citing' all references are to:  acknowledge your sources (avoid plagiarism)  allow the reader to verify the information provided  provide information so the reader can check your sources (St. Columba’s College Planner 2016, p.17)

3 What to reference/cite? According to Gabe (n.d): All sources of information used in writing your essay must be referenced.  You use citation to: Acknowledge others’ work in your work Refer to them individually (surname/organisation, year) in a body of work Using a direct quotation (surname/organisation, year, page) Citations are used for ideas, images and quotes Example

4 How to cite within a text?  According to Wozniak (2016), the students in her class need help with citing within a text. This would be true for many people.  My favourite quote in literature is when Anne from Anne of Green Gables states, “…tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it... Yet.” (Montgomery, 1908 p.255). Images:  One of the images … (Rinaldi, 2012).  The image of Taylor Swift - Speak Now Tour Hits Sydney, Australia 2012, (Rinaldi, 2012) shows that…. Author’s surname followed by year in brackets. Full reference added in bibliography Author’s surname & year in brackets. Full reference added in bibliography N.B All sources used, from referring to them directly or using their ideas must be added in the bibliography.
