In your notebook… Think of a character in a book or movie that you absolutely love, or love to hate. Describe that character as best you can using as many details as possible.
3
The process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.
4
Through direct characterization and indirect characterization. Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is. Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character.
5
Use the mnemonic device of STEAL to remember the five types of indirect characterization: Speech: WHAT they say (words that a person speaks says a lot about them), HOW they say it (accent, voice tone, speed) Thoughts/Thinking: What is revealed through thoughts and feelings? Effects on others: What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character? Actions: What does the character do? How does he/she behave? Looks: What does the character look like? How does he/she dress?
6
Feeling (body language, voice, tone) Reactions (Are they popular or alone? Are they leaders or followers?) Emotions (Are others attracted to them or move away?) Under stress (When we are stressed our behavior often changes to something less thoughtful. Stress is thus a further test of personality and reveals more of the person's character.)
7
Take out “Thank You, Ma’am” again. With your shoulder partner, complete the following: 1. Identify all the direct or indirect characterization for Mrs. Jones OR Roger. 2. Create a Facebook page for one of them based on your findings.
