2 Objectives for Today O Students will compare and contrast characters in text. O Students will make inferences and predictions. O Students will use comparing and contrasting to infer what characters think and to predict what characters will do.

3 Elements of Characterization  How does the character look? (physical description)  What does the character say and do ?  How does the character act, think, or feel?  How do the other characters in the story think about and react to this character?  How does the character make the reader feel?

5 Compare and Contrast How the Characters Feel About School Rules (p. 74) Miata Follows school rules Doesn’t want any gum Both Are supposed to obey school rules Rudy Ignores school rules Plays with his gum

6 Compare and Contrast the Characters Presidential Goals (p. 76-80) Miata Wants to make the school cleaner and prettier Wants to raise money to buy computers Both Want to make changes Rudy Wants longer recess and ice cream every day Cares only about fun

7 Compare and Contrast the Audience’s Reaction to Miata and to Rudy (p. 74-80) Miata The students are bored by Miata’s speech. Both Which student do you think will win, and why? Rudy Rudy’s speech excites the audience.

8 Which student do you think will win, and why? Rudy will probably win because he is popular, and has a connection with the voters.
