4 Tribes of South Carolina  There were many in South Carolina  Each had specific lifestyle depending on where they lived  Spoke different language  Preserved history through storytelling  The big 3: Cherokee, Catawba, and Yemassee

5 Cherokee  Lived in foothills of mountains of SC  Called themselves ‘the real people”- powerful nation  Villages surrounded by high walls  Homes made of daub (mixture of clay and grass) and roof made of wattle (branches and bark)

6 Cherokee  Men fished by poisoning the water  Village run by men and women-made the rules and helped keep peace or declare war

7 Catawba  Called themselves the ‘river people’ Lived along rivers in Piedmont region  Homes were wigwams made of branches and covered with bark, grasses and reeds

8 Catawba  Had council houses in villages-leaders made rules for people  Known for clay pots

9 Yemassee  Came from Florida to escape Spanish  Lived on beach in summer –wigwams covered with palmetto leaves  Fall, Winter, and spring lived farther inland  Ate mainly clams and oysters  Council included women
