Info-Tech Research Group3 3 Resolution Situation Complication Info-Tech Insight Executive Summary Wi-Fi has become a utility and you can’t afford to live in the past. Your employees and residents are not only demanding free Wi-Fi, but also faster and more reliable wireless networks as they push the limits of your network’s capacity with a growing number of devices per person. Keeping up with these demands and securely managing an increasingly complex network is difficult. Poorly defined requirements can result in failure to meet organizational needs and low public satisfaction. A poorly designed network and implementation timeline can result in re- work and costly additional headaches. Managing multiple SSIDs with different authentication rules can be a challenge. Make a solid business case for your WLAN build or refresh project by understanding the value it provides to the government and citizens, and be prepared to support it. Define the use cases and business context for your WLAN to make sure your technical requirements can satisfy your use- case requirements. Develop a comprehensive request for proposal based on your requirements, and score your responses using a standard methodology. Carefully plan your network design and action plan prior to implementation. 1.Define your technical WLAN requirements based on your context, physical environment, and requirements. 2.If you design for capacity, density and coverage will follow. 3.Partner with carriers or telecom companies to reduce the cost of building and maintaining your WLANs.

Some check-ins along the way would help keep us on track.” “We need to hit the ground running and get this project kicked off immediately. Our team has the ability to take this over once we get a framework and strategy in place.” “Our team does not have the time or the knowledge to take this project on. We need assistance through the entirety of this project.” Degree of Customization Diagnostics and consistent methodologies throughout all four options

Info-Tech Research Group9 9 Rising expectations, device proliferation, and the desire to plan for the future are driving WLAN build and refresh projects Demand for capacity There is an increased demand for capacity due to the following: 1.Growth of number of devices per user. Cisco estimates there will be three networked devices per capita by 2018, up from two networked devices per capita in 2013. 2.Users are accessing more bandwidth intensive content. New standards (802.11ac) Devices are made for the new standards and the old standards are slowly getting phased out. Drivers Bring your own everything Personal devices are in almost every workplace and employees are demanding the ability to use the corporate network. Fifty-five percent of organizations already explicitly allow the use of personal devices for work purposes. Increased expectations from employees and citizens Wi-Fi has become a utility and your employees and citizens are demanding better Wi-Fi coverage and performance. Future workflow improvement opportunities Wi-Fi can enable new applications and workflow improvement opportunities that lead to innovation and more efficient processes.

Info-Tech Research Group10Info-Tech Research Group10 Activity: Assess your current WLAN challenges and project drivers Why are you considering building or refreshing your WLAN? Sticky Note Exercise Participants: IT director/CIO Infrastructure manager/VP Network manager Steps: Pass a stack of sticky notes to each participant. Within three minutes, come up with as many current WLAN challenges and project drivers as possible. Have each participant post their sticky notes on a whiteboard and group related challenges and project drivers. o Include discussions around current number of users and devices, the growth of users and devices, user expectations, capacity constraints, etc. Record your current challenges and project drivers into your business case. Look for this icon at the bottom right of slides where recording data into a tool or template is required. Transfer your current challenges and drivers to your business case. 1.1

Info-Tech Research Group11Info-Tech Research Group11 This project can result in increased organizational efficiency, happier citizens, and a more prosperous community Some benefits of building or refreshing the WLANs in public spaces: City Hall, Fire Halls, Transit Operations Centers, Etc. Parks, Community Centers, Stadiums, Golf Courses, Libraries, Etc. Improve employee mobility and efficiency. Users can access the data they need online on the spot, rather than having to wait until they return to their desks. Enable more efficient workflows and processes. The ability to stay connected to the internet while mobile can result in workflow innovations and improvements. Satisfy your employees. Workarounds due to the lack of Wi-Fi at work can be frustrating for your staff. Most employees expect the ability to connect their personal devices to their corporate network during work hours. Some benefits of building or refreshing the WLANs in government buildings: Satisfy citizens. Close the “digital divide” and provide internet access in recreational areas for low-income citizens. Promote tourism in the city and revive downtown areas and attractions. Generate revenue through monetization of Wi-Fi. Some municipalities such as New York City are planning to provide free Wi-Fi hotspots with sponsors and advertisements as a source of revenue.
