9 Prior Learning / CFU What is an argumentative essay?
How should I begin to write the introduction to my essay? Even though I have a claim, what do I need to add to help convince people that I have a good claim?

10 Today We are going to use our graphic organizers to begin to write a rough draft

11 Relevance Have you ever written something and later thought…
I could have phrased that better. Maybe I should have used a better word there. Oops, I spelled that word wrong! I should have added another section or sentence to make my point clearer.

12 What does this mean to me?
The reason for writing a rough draft is get something “ROUGH” on the paper first, but still containing: Good structure Good content After writing a rough draft, you will be able to re-read to see where you can: Omit or add sections or sentences Fix word choice Correct punctuation and grammar

13

14 Using Transition Words
You will be writing a 6 paragraph essay. Introduction Reason & Evidence 1 Reason & Evidence 2 Reason & Evidence 3 Counterclaim Conclusion When beginning a new paragraph, use a transition word like: First, Second, Third, Next, Last, Finally Using transition words help your essay flow

15 Let’s Start Writing You’ve already written your introduction which contains the topic and your claim. Now we’ll move to your first reason and evidence to support it.

16 I Do: Support Paragraphs
Claim: Abby Sunderland should be allowed to sail around the world alone at the age of 16. Reason 1: She has many years of sailing experience Evidence 1: Abby knew how to handle many different sailing circumstances, according to her in a TV news interview. My first reason to support my claim is that Abby Sunderland has had many years of sailing experience. She had been training for voyage for a very long time and knew how to handle many different sailing circumstances if they were to arise, according to the news interview. Laurence Sunderland, Abby’s father, also knew Abby’s ability and talent on the water and believed she had the proper training to take on this challenge.

17 CFU What components do I need to put into my supporting paragraphs? (Hint: There are 4) Why do should I add transition words between paragraphs?

18 We Do What’s another reason to support this claim?
What transition word could I use to introduce my second reason and evidence? Sentence 1 (Transition & Reason): ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sentence 2 (Evidence): ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sentence 3 (Expand or Explain):

19 We Do: Counterclaim How do you think I might start writing the counterclaim paragraph? What transition word could I use to introduce my counterclaim? Sentence 1 (Transition & Counterclaim): ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sentence 2 & 3 (Reasons & Evidence): ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sentence 4 (Expand or Explain):

20 I do: Conclusion Now you need to wrap up your essay with these components: 1. Add a final transition word 2. Restate your claim 3. Restate your reasons in a new way. 4. Concluding sentence

21 Example: Conclusion In conclusion, Abby Sunderland should be able to sail around the world solo as a teenager. She has been sailing for many years, preparing for this voyage, and has family support. By the reasons and evidence given, we can assume that Abby Sunderland is a highly qualified individual who can sail solo on her own.

22 CFU What components do you need to include in your conclusion paragraph? What is the purpose of writing a rough draft? How will writing a rough draft prepare you for the editing and revising process?

23 You Try Using YOUR graphic organizer with YOUR claim and reasons, begin to write your rough draft. Be sure to add transitions and the beginning of each new paragraph. Be sure to state your reason and support with evidence. ALWAYS explain yourself. WORK HARD BECAUSE WHATEVER YOU DON’T FINISH WILL BECOME HOMEWORK OVER THE WEEKEND!!
