2 In the National Palace Museum, there is an enormous treasure trove collected from the various Chinese dynasties which have been preserved and inherited from the imperial palace of the Cing dynasty. In 1924, as the last emperor of the Cing, Pu-yi, moved out of the Palcae (the also called Royal Forbidden City), the new government organized a “Committee for the disposition of Cing Imperial Possessions”( 清朝皇室善後委員會 ) to deal with various collections or artifacts within the palace. In 1925, the National Palace Museum was formally opened for the public to view the important and invaluable exhibition.

3 Since the Japanese army invaded from 1932 to 1945 and continuous battles were proceeding between the Kuoamingtang(Nationalist) and Communist armies after 1945, the most precious objects in the museum’s collection were sent southward or westward. Eventually, a total of 2972 crates were shipped in three groups to Taiwan in 1948, which were only a quarter of the items originally transported south from Peking

4 The collections shipped to Taiwan were store at Peilou in Taichung, where there was also a temporary exhibition office until a new museum was built at Wuai-shuang-si in 1965. The current collection of the National Palace Museum features not only the objects brought to Taiwan from China during the war, but also donations made or purchases after the museum was officially inaugurated in Taiwan. Based on the statistics of the museum, as of February 2008, the entire collection is composed of 655,707 pieces.
