Rise of the Moguls Moguls were Turks led by Babur Conquered northern India in 1504 By 1605 ruled most of India

Structure of Government Ruled by an emperor Had a large bureaucracy divided into 2 Upper ranks = nonnative Muslims Lower ranking = native Hindus

Role of Religion The Moguls were Sunni Muslim Under Akbar & others, Hindus were treated kindly & tolerance was practiced Later Mogul rulers enforced strict laws & taxes on Hindus New religious group, Sikhs, were persecuted by Moguls

The Ming Dynasty The Ming overthrew the Mongols in 1368

Structure of Government Emperors ruled the Ming Dynasty The Forbidden Palace was center of Ming Government Confucian civil servants (largest bureaucracy in the ancient world) helped govern the empire.

Role of Religion The official “religion” of China was the philosophy, Confucianism Many Chinese peasants and merchants were Buddhist, however Chinese emperors were tolerant of other religions Confucianism, however, was a part of everyone’s life & the only “path” to government
