Antibiotics I have the flu  Which is best to help me?

Objectives Describe how we can kill microorganisms and the problems of antibiotic resistance. Outcomes (5) Describe ways of killing microorganisms (6) Explain how bacteria become resistant to antibiotics and the problems of this. (7) Evaluate the impact of antibiotic resistance. Key terms: bacteria, antibiotic, sterilisation, radiation, antibacterial

What ways can we use to kill microorganisms? Outcomes (5) Describe ways of killing microorganisms (6) Explain how bacteria become resistant to antibiotics and the problems of this. 7 Which medicine? A teenage girl has the influenza (flu) virus. She has a cold, runny nose and feels very run- down. A Grandmother has developed a chest infection which she has left for a while and is now very severe. Her immune system cannot fight it off. Can you justify your choice?

Remember that bacteria reproduce by ASEXUALLY. This means that they make clones of themselves….

Bacteria can divide and reproduce every 20 minutes! 20 MINUTES

Because they are clones, all bacteria will be identical…..

Unless something goes wrong and there is a mutation… Mutant with different properties

Sometimes, the mutant bacteria will be resistant to one type of antibiotic… KILLED

If you are treated with an antibiotic, the normal bacteria will be killed…

KILLED

The mutant bacteria survive and reproduce to produce lots more antibiotic resistant bacteria…

Eventually, there will be new mutations which mean that some bacteria are now resistant to two different antibiotics…. Mutant resistant to 2 antibiotics Mutant resistant to 1 antibiotic

This process happens more if: antibiotics are used too often people don’t take the full course of their antibiotic. We end up with lots of bacteria that are resistant to many antibiotics…

This is what has lead to MRSA

Design a poster for a doctors surgery that explains important points about taking antibiotics and why it is vital that we take them correctly Outcomes (5) Describe ways of killing microorganism s (6) Explain how bacteria become resistant to antibiotics and the problems of this. (7) Evaluate the impact of antibiotic resistance. Key terms: bacteria, antibiotic, sterilisation, radiation, antibacterial

Explain why these statements are false: 1. Pathogens produce new strains of themselves when they need to become resistant to antibiotics. 2. Any antibiotic can be used to treat any disease caused by bacteria. 3. A new resistant strain of a bacterium will spread rapidly because there will be no effective treatment. 4. Resistant pathogens cannot reproduce fast enough to cause a problem. 5. Antibiotics are used to treat non-serious infections, such as mild throat infections, in order to slow down the development of resistant strains. 6. The appearance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria means that it is a waste of time to develop new antibiotics. Outcomes (5) Describe ways of killing microorganism s (6) Explain how bacteria become resistant to antibiotics and the problems of this. (7) Evaluate the impact of antibiotic resistance. Key terms: bacteria, antibiotic, sterilisation, radiation, antibacterial
