2. Why this Text?
An argument is a vehicle for presenting a point of view and persuading an audience to agree with that point of view. This lesson examines whether people who act to ensure their own survival instead of helping others are selfish or not.

In an ARGUMENT, an author must decide the most effective way to present ideas and present support for a claim. A CLAIM is an author’s position on an issue. When an author develops a claim, it may or may not be stated directly. Often, an author will use details at the beginning of an argument to get the audience thinking about an issue.
