CEA Paragraph  In a CEA paragraph, compare and contrast Della and Madam Loisel. Who is the better person and why ?

C.E.A Paragraph  Make a C laim  Take a position on the question and offer an answer  Back it up with E vidence  Provide examples to support the claim. The best examples tend to be quotes directly from the text which illustrate your point.  A nalyze the evidence  Explain the relationship between the claim and the evidence.  Answer the questions “Why?” or “How?”

Your paragraph needs to be a cheeseburger that satisfies your reader…  The upper bun is the claim that introduces the paragraph.  The evidence is the “meat” that comes in the middle of the paragraph. It tends to be the longest part.  The lower bun is the analysis that supports all the other pieces. It explains how the evidence supports the claim.

Rate the claim… Della is a better person than Madam Loisel. OR Della’s willingness to sacrifice her most coveted asset makes her a better person than the selfish Madam Loisel.  A good claim is specific and previews the main points of the paragraph.

Put the paragraph in order  Della’s willingness to sacrifice her most coveted asset makes her a better person than the vain and materialistic Madam Loisel.  While both Della and Madam Loisel are poor and unfortunate women who view material objects as a possible route to happiness, Della’s materialism springs from the desire to express her love for her husband, unlike Loisel, who only wants fine clothing and jewels for her own selfish pride and pleasure.  Loisel tells her husband that “there’s nothing more humiliating than to look poor among other women who are rich” (de Maupassant 2).  Della is not concerned with what others think of her as she gladly sells her hair to buy a watch chain for her husband.  Her sacrifice is described as a gesture of “generosity added to love” (Henry 217).  Even though both women are determined to obtain material goods at any cost, Della’s motivations and sacrifice show her to be the better person.
