Warm Up K-W-L: Algae
3
Warm Up Write the question and the answer: What are the three groups we divide Protists into?
4
My Protist 1.Draw it 2.Name it 3.Which of the 3 groups of Protists is it in? 4.How does it get its food?(answer with a complete sentence) 5.Does it have cell walls. 6.Does it have specialized ways for movement. If yes then what are they?
5
A protist is an organism that lives in moist or wet surroundings that could be unicellular or multicellular. Protists 1 1
6
Unicellular protists usually reproduce by cell division. Multicellular protists usually reproduce by regeneration. Regeneration is when parts of the organism can break off and grow into entirely new organisms that are genetically identical. Protists 1 1
7
Protists are usually divided into three groups based on whether they share certain characteristics with plants, animals, or fungi. 1.Plant-like 2. Animal-like 3. Fungus-like Classification of Protists Protists 1 1
8
1 1 Plant-like contain chlorophyll and make their own food, have cell walls, and no specialized ways for movement.
9
Protists 1 1 Animal-like cannot make their own food, do not have cell walls, and have specialized ways for movement. Animal-like protists capture their food.
10
Protists 1 1 Fungus-like cannot make their own food, some have cell walls & some do not, and have specialized ways for movement. Fungus-like protists absorb food from their surroundings.
11
Algae are plantlike protists that are important in the environment because they produce oxygen as a result of photosynthesis. Protists 1 1
12
Under certain conditions, algae can reproduce rapidly and develop into what is known as an algal bloom. Red tides that appear along the east and Gulf coasts of the United States are the result of algal blooms. Protists 1 1
13
Protozoans are one-celled, animal-like protists that are classified by how they move. The three types of protozoans are ciliates, flagellates, and amoeba. Protists 1 1
14
Ciliates have cilia which are short, threadlike structures that extend from the cell membrane. Protists 1 1
15
Flagellates have a flagella which is a long whip like structure that helps a cell move. Protists 1 1
16
Amoeba are protozoans that move through their environments and feed using temporary extensions of their cytoplasm called pseudopods. Protists 1 1
17
Fungus like protists include several small groups of organisms such as slime molds, water molds, and downy mildews. Although all fungus like protists produce spores like fungi, most of them can move from place to place using pseudopods like the amoeba. Protists 1 1
