O Question: Was the invasion of Normandy too great a risk? O Thesis: The invasion of Normandy was too great a risk for the Allies to take during World War II because there were various components of the invasion that could have went wrong leading the whole operation to failure, there was challenging weather that could have compromised the mission, and the reality that many lives were being gambled with. Maslowski, Peter, and Allan R. Millett. For The Common Defense: A Military History of the United States of America. New York: The Free Press, 1994. This work outlines the military history of the United States. Chapter 14 focuses specifically on the tactical thinking taken in the decision made by Eisenhower to invade Normandy on June 6, 1944. The chapter takes the reader though the problems of the weather and tides as well as Eisenhower’s thinking concerning the safety of the troops and the logistical implications should he be forced to postpone. It outlines for the reader the difficulties in making a decision that had to balance the need for the invasion to take place and the chance of success based upon the weather. This source could be utilized to prove/ support the second point of the thesis statement of: there was challenging weather that could have compromised the mission. This book is a reliable source because it is written by two historical professors who have focused their careers on researching this topic. SAMPLE A.B.

Prompt: Should absolute monarchs be remembered as state builders or tyrants? Thesis: Elizabeth I would be considered a state builder because of her powerful leadership skills, her concern for the welfare of her subjects, and her interest in furthering the arts and education.

This work outlines the early life of Elizabeth I – how she came to power and what she accomplished once she assumed the throne of England. It outlines Elizabeth as being a state builder that had many positive impacts on the development of the British empire. For instance, she was able to settle many of the problems that her sister, Queen Mary, left behind for her to inherit. Elizabeth was able to end war with France, while also forging a strong victory against the Spanish. Her Navy was able to defeat the infamous Spanish Armada in 1588. This publication also touches upon her cultural achievements in which the arts flourished under her rule with the emergence of authors such as William Shakespeare. This publication will be used to support each of the three points of the thesis statement. This publication is a credible source because it is from an unbiased reliable source. It provide primary and secondary evidence.
