THE OUTER PLANETS
2
WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON? Which is the biggest planet? Which has the longest ‘day’? Which has the longest ‘year’? Which has the most moons?
3
WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON? Called gas giants because the do not have a solid surface. Extremely strong gravitational pull. All have many moons. Much of the planet is actually liquid. All have many moons. All have rings. Thick, dense atmospheres.
4
JUPITER Largest planet. Great Red Spot is actually a storm. 62 known moons. Faint rings.

JUPITER’S MOONS
6
SATURN 2 nd largest planet. Similar atmosphere to Jupiter, but less violent. Dramatic rings. 62 known moons.

SATURN’S MOONS
8
URANUS Twice as far from the sun as Saturn. Blue-green color from methane in atmosphere. Axis of rotation is tilted 90 o from the vertical. 27 known moons. Very faint rings.
9
URANUS’ MOONS
10
NEPTUNE Blue-green color comes from high concentration of methane in the atmosphere. Interior of the planet is hot, causing clouds and storms in the atmosphere. 13 known moons. Faint rings.
