COMMENTS (2011): Still waiting for either time allocated or funds to cover extra PA for work as SAS Tutor. PGMEC have been very supportive in organising meetings. Medical personnel invited to meetings but so far are unable to attend. To some extent; issues remain around time provision. Satisfied with support from DME, but not my clinical Director.

ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE SUPPORT RECEIVED FROM THE DME TO SUPPORT THE SAS PROJECT? Comments (2011): What is DME? To some extent. 30% 60% 10% 75% 17% 8%

ANY OTHER COMMENTS It is difficult to engage with all SAS doctors. Just keeping up to date with list of newly appointed speciality doctors can be difficult. Even if I have contact details, not all doctors respond. The meetings at the deanery have been enlightening but I have not made progress locally. Since restructuring of our trust, we have made some progress and hope to make things moving.
30
Continues: Issues remain of time provision within job plans to perform role adequately. Trust is going through a period of change and there remains further dialogue and negotiation to be undertaken. Deanery support will be required and gratefully received. I am pleased with the commitment of the deanery to pursue SAS doctors’ career development and extra funding has been very useful. The faculty has been developed and I hope the support from Deanery will continue in years to come. SAS Doctors are viewed very positively on our Trust, and have had access to study leave and funding prior to this additional funding.
31
Continues: Difficult as community Trust and no DME, initial help from local acute trust DME- Now seems to have lost interest It would be useful to know what happens to other trusts as well as within the Deanery. There have been some issues with different doctors with regards to their service matters which are difficult to deal within an SAS LFG. Some SAS doctors have been difficult to engage. Am working on this.
32
Comments from 2012 Many SAS Drs require top-up training and some arrange to do extra subspecialty attachments in their own time. Having this funding at least can cover travel expenses. Going on courses or presenting at meetings (some international) is also important and the Trusts annual allocation is not always enough to cover these costs. SAS Funds have been used for this purpose in our trust. Looking after the needs of SAS doctors takes time and effort and it would be right for this to be recognised. I would really like to have support from the Deanery for SAS faculty.
33
Comments continued There should be meetings of this SAS group if possible at least 2-3 meetings per year. This has been a very useful process to establish best practice: –Give SAS doctors a voice –Create peer group meetings for SAS Doctors –Opportunities for networking, peer support and supervision to develop skills and training –This has improved the drive and motivation of SAS doctors to develop towards article 14
34
Comments continued The project has succeeded in raising the profile of SAS doctors and in particular their need for continuing education and appraisal. I have particularly targeted appraisal at our trust and have succeeded in embedding the SAS doctors within the process. The meetings that have developed have allowed communication between SAS doctors that would have not been possible before. Having funds has been able to utilise time and money very efficiently to organise study days as per PDP plans. Individuals have used it and we used as a group, lot of support (admin from) post-grad education manager in the trust.
35
Comments continued We have come closer as a group (the trust covers a large geographical area). Need to continue SAS Tutors. The SAS group is totally transformed with keen and enthusiastic approach. New services, application for article 14. Good satisfaction on survey
36
Summary SAS Tutors as part of LFGs have been very successful in KSS in creating a support structure for their SAS doctors These LFGs should continue to be supported by all local trusts Individualised approach for the SAS doctors is needed to increase their engagement with the process
