2 BAY BLACK BROWN Black – all black with no brown at all. May fade in the sun. Bay – reddish-brown with black points – mane, tail, legs, ear tips. Brown – black with brown muzzle, flanks, belly.

3 CHESTNUT LIVER CHESTNUT CHESTNUT WITH FLAXEN Chestnut – reddish or orangish- brown with mane, tail and points same color – sometimes lighter or darker. Same as chestnut, but dark brown. Same as chestnut but with very light colored mane and tail – can be confused with palomino.

4 GREY STEEL GREY DAPPLED GREY ROSE GREY Grey – Born any color, and turns whiter with time. Steel grey – evenly grey all over – usually while young. Rose grey – like steel grey but reddish. Dappled grey – white background with dark circular areas – usually concentrated in certain areas. Most greys are dappled at some point.

5 LIGHT DAPPLED GREY FLEA-BITTEN GREY WHITE GREY Flea-bitten grey – white with small dark flecks all over body. Usually happens when horses are older. White – solid white – usually occurs in older horses.

6 CREMELLO PERLINO Cremellos are very pale with light –colored skin, blue eys and white mane and tail. Perlino – like cremello, but with some color to the mane and tail, Albinos are not known to exist in horses.

7 BUCKSKIN DARK BUCKSKIN Buckskin – like a bay, but with the body light colored. Can vary from very dark brown to nearly white.

8 PALOMINO GOLDEN PALOMINO SOOTY PALOMINO Body is golden colored with a white mane and tail. They can vary from very pale to very dark.

9 PALOMINO This is a morgan mare that was born as a palomino, but turned very dark as she got older. She is still genetically a palomino.

10 DUN GRULLA YELLOW DUN RED DUN Dun – body can be any color, but is lighter, often a mousy color. It has a true dorsal stripe, and other primitive markings.

11 PIEBALD TOBIANO SKEWBALD PIEBALD SPLASH Piebalds are pintos/paints that are black and white. Skewbald – pintos/paints that are any color other than black, and white.

12 BAY (RED) ROAN BLACK (BLUE) ROAN CHESTNUT (STRAWBERRY) ROAN Roan - solid color that has white hairs sprinkled throughout the body. The head and legs are dark.

18 LEOPARD BLANKET VARNISH SNOWCAP FEW-SPOT Appaloosa - comes in several coat patterns. They are always accompanied by striped hooves, mottled skin, and white around the eyes.

19 BEND OR SPOTS DOMINANT WHITE Born all-white, has dark eyes.
