2. This presentation will provide information about three schools that are somewhat different but so much the same because they are providing an education to students of different race. These schools are providing tools to help the students become productive citizens and to help them to go on to college and start a career of their own. Each school is enhancing the learning ability of the students as well as preparing the parents for a much brighter future as they continue to influence their children to push forward and never to give up even when they face adversity. The schools are very equipped to meet the needs of the students as well as provide the necessary 21 st century tools the students need to be successful.

3. Culturally Relevant Inspiration St. Joseph Catholic School is a private school located on 1501 VFW Road Greenville, MS. It was established in 1888 and it’s motto is Animus, Mentis, Corpus (mind, body, soul). It has grades 7 - 12 which offers an academic program that includes 16 honors classes in the disciplines of English, Mathematic, Science, and Social Studies. The school also offers college scholarships which generally exceed one million dollars. St. Joseph is a diverse school with people of all social classes and ethnicities. They base education on strong Christian values and Catholic social teachings. With 51% male and 48% female.

Culturally Relevant Inspiration St. Joseph 21 st Century Skills are: Tutoring which is the students along with preparing them for PSAT/SAT/ACT Test Preps The St. Thomas Aquinas Program is a program that serves those students who may find academics challenging due to the diagnosis of a learning disability and /or ADHD. The goal of the program is to provide support for the continuing development of these skills, and to help each student become an independent learner. All students have a St. Joseph’s email account. This allows them access to email as well as Google Drive and Google Docs. They have Interactive white boards located in both middle and high school in science and math classrooms and allows both teacher and students the ability to be able to use tools and activities to enhance their lessons. St. Joseph also provide credit recovery options which allows students who have failed a chance to repeat the class in a pre-approved credit recovery program. Credit recovery is intended for remediation only and must be approved by the Dean of Students Academics Support Services.

5. Culturally Relevant Inspiration St. Joseph allows the teachers to be creative by allowing them time to show students how they can make items that are without reach of their own. They provide them with classes such as shop and mechanic which the teachers have a chance to show the students how they can create boards with their names on them as well as build lockers that drawers for the classes. It provides such as excellent way of learning and no matter what the race no one will be turned down because of who they are or where the come from.

6. Culturally Relevant Inspiration Solomon Magnet School is public school located at 556 Bowman Blvd. in Greenville, MS. It has 672 students in grades 7- 12. Solomon serves those students who advances in their studies such as AP English, AP Math. Students would attend other campuses then board the bus the be transported to the campus to attend classes. Solomon is one of the many school within Greenville Public School District and it serves as the base school for those who have worked hard to maintain an A average. It is known as the honors school or the school of excellent.

Culturally Relevant Inspiration Solomon 21 st Century Skills are: Offering students tutoring after school Providing ipads for students to complete assignments Smart Boards within the classrooms Credit Recovery Classes where students receive the chance to take classes over that they have failed Duel Enrollment which is a program that allows students to take courses for college while they are yet in school The school offers a comprehensive educational experience with a traditional liberal arts curriculum, including arts, humanities, sciences

Culturally Relevant Inspiration At Solomon the students are given the chance to express how they think the learning is effecting their lives and ask questions of how things would be if they were given the chance to come up with ideas about the curriculum. They do not always get the chance to talk or ask questions but in the time they do, the students tend to ask why they do not get the chance to show what they have learned instead of always having to sit and listen to what the teacher is instructing. Solomon offers art classes where the students get the chance to create pictures of how they feel and what they think things will be like in the near future. They also have the chance to create music out of bottles and sticks they have found outside the classroom. Being in a predominate African American school sometimes makes it limited of the things they have and can use to be creative. If they could look outside the box and know that there is more to life than what they see it will allow them the chance to pull out what is on the inside of them.

9. Culturally Relevant Inspiration Hollandale Simmons Jr. & Sr. High School located on 501 W. Washington St. in Hollandale, MS. Their mission is to educate and empower students to complete globally by collaborating and engaging parents and the community to become advocates of exemplary support and instructions, we will accomplish the vision. Simmons core values are believing in family and community relationships that build the values of education. They also believe they are moving students achievement toward academic excellence. Last, they believe in a culture of high expectation for equality, integrity, honesty, and respect as well as student-centered classrooms.

Culturally Relevant Inspiration Simmons 21 st Century Skills are: Mentoring students to be the best they can be Providing tutoring for those who are at a low in academics Providing technology for those who are without technology outside the classrooms The usage of white and smartboards within the classrooms Providing students with information to help prepare them for state tests Study sessions preparing them for SAT/ACT Test Prep

11. Culturally Relevant Inspiration Simmons is one of many schools that follow the state guided curriculum for teaching the students within their school. They also follow the state guided test schedules when it comes to preparing for state test as well as nine weeks exams. Students does not have say to what they are going to have on the test or if they will have another chance to retake the test. They can only hope they do their best the first time in order to receive a passing grade to move on to the next level. Teacher also go by the record of the student from the years before in order to determine what level to teach the students or where they may be in this time of their life while attending this class.

12. Culturally Relevant Inspiration Simmons’ teachers also offer art classes so the students can be creative in their drawings and music. They are allowed to draw to express themselves along with build while in a class called wood shop. This class allows the students and teachers to share in building and being creative about life and things that will help people become better at serving others. It provides guidance for the teachers so they can show the students how they can get more out of the use of their hands as well as showing other they have a talent that they had never used. Having the ability to be creative gives the students a voice in the class just as the teacher. It show they can apply themselves to things or projects that will allow them to be real when drawing or painting. During this time it creates a bonds between the teacher and student one that will never be forgotten.
