CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Starter activity LO4 Understand strategies which support emergent literacy [AC 4.5] Time: 15 mins How many technological devices can you use? How many mobile devices do you have access to? What additional technology do you have at home? What is your ‘must-have’ device? What would your life be like without mobile technology or the internet? Discuss your answers with a partner. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Planning You will be required to explain strategies to plan activities which support and extend emergent literacy skills and encourage the following areas: Speaking and listening Emergent reading Sustained shared thinking Writing Digital literacy. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO4 Understand strategies which support emergent literacy [AC 4.5]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Digital literacy Digital literacy involves children using digital media and technology in a confident and competent way. Children should have access to a wide range of devices. They should be used for a variety of purposes and children should be encouraged to use them independently. These devices can support children to be creative and can stimulate in-depth conversations. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO4 Understand strategies which support emergent literacy [AC 4.5]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Classroom discussion activity Time: 15 mins Technology in your setting What devices are available for children to use in your setting? How often are they made available? Do all children have equal access to these devices? How are they used to support emergent literacy skills? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO4 Understand strategies which support emergent literacy [AC 4.5]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Planning When planning activities you will need to consider everything you have covered in the unit so far. You will need to ensure the activities are age and stage appropriate. You should use the resources available to you in the setting. You should also build on children’s interests to engage them in developing their skills. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO4 Understand strategies which support emergent literacy [AC 4.5]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Pairs activity Time: 15 mins Share your completed planning table with a partner. Discuss: Suitable age ranges How each idea or activity can support emergent literacy skills Resources needed. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO4 Understand strategies which support emergent literacy [AC 4.5]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Sustained shared thinking (SST) Sustained shared thinking (SST) involves practitioners working together with children to extend and develop their speaking, listening and thinking skills. It requires the practitioner to be involved in the thoughts of a child and to help them to develop a skill or solve a problem. SST can support emergent literacy skills as a practitioner can listen to a child, model appropriate language and encourage the child to discuss their thoughts. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO4 Understand strategies which support emergent literacy [AC 4.5]
12
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Classroom discussion activity Time: 15 mins Sustained shared thinking requires the practitioner to get fully involved with a child’s thought process. Consider: What might stop this from happening? What might happen if a practitioner gets too involved in a child’s activity? What skills does the practitioner need to fully support emergent literacy through sustained shared thinking? How will the child benefit from the practitioner’s involvement? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO4 Understand strategies which support emergent literacy [AC 4.5]
13
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Independent research activity Time: 15 mins Using all the information gathered during this session, create activity plans to support and extend emergent literacy skills. Ensure that your plans include all of the areas below: Speaking and listening Emergent reading Sustained shared thinking Writing Digital literacy. You do not need a separate activity for each area, but they must all be covered within your plans. Find out how your setting documents planning for emergent literacy skills. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO4 Understand strategies which support emergent literacy [AC 4.5]
14
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Extension activity Time: 15 mins We have previously discussed the importance of partnership with parents/carers. Create a short information document to explain the two following points: How would you explain the benefits of children using age- appropriate digital technology to parents? How can you encourage parents/carers to participate in shared sustained thinking with their children? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO4 Understand strategies which support emergent literacy [AC 4.5]
