A, An, the are called articles. Article is of two types. 1.Indefinite article 2.Definite article. A and an are indefinite articles because they don't indicate definitely. The is definite article because it indicates definitely.

The use of (A) ‘A’ is used….. 1.Before a word that starts with a consonant. (b,c,d,f,g,h,j,k,l,m,n,p,q, r,s,t,v,w,x,y,z) For example:

This is a cat

This is a rose

I can see a procession in the picture

EEXCEPTIONS There are also some exceptions: 1.If the word begins with vowel but it sounds like consonant then we use a before it. For example A.In “university” we see ‘u’, but it utters a consonant sound’ yoo’. So we say He reads in a university. b. In ‘one’ we see ‘o’ but it sounds like’wa’.So we say I have a one taka note.

He reads in a university.

I have a one taka note.

The use of ‘an’ ‘An’ is generally used …. a.Before a word that starts with a vowel (a,e,I,o,u). For example,

I see an elephant

I eat an orange.

Exceptions The use of ‘a’ and ‘an’ depends on the sound of the beginning word. We can see some exceptions. a. If the word begins with consonant but utters like vowel then ‘an’ will be used there. For example: a.In ‘honor’, ‘h’ sounds like ‘O’ not ‘ho’. So we say This is an honor for me. b. In some words like( M.A,L.L.B,F.C.P.S) M,L,F are uttered like am,al,af not m,l,f.
