It is hard to describe motivation because you cannot see or touch it. You can only to listen to the word of the person or notice the signs or effort. Motivation contributes to competent adult learning. In order for us as adult to be successful learners we need to be motivated and enthusiastic in order to learn. As adults we need to improve our learning and creativity so that things will move more smoothly, and be able to communicate and concentrate better. Motivation can also help to decrease our anxieties. What Motivates Adults to Learn? According to Wlodkowsky (1999), enhancing adult’s motivation to learn, they need to feel included, have a good attitude and behaviour and build confidence. Inclusion- the feeling of being safe, secure and respected. Inclusion- the feeling of being safe, secure and respected. Confidence Building- requiring new skills helps to develop self-esteem. Confidence Building- requiring new skills helps to develop self-esteem. This can be linked with Maslow’s (1970) theory of adults having needs. He believes that adults have to overcome one need before fulfilling another to reach their goals.

As learners we can identify with the five needs identified by Maslow. By reflecting on our own experiences it is possible to see that we have to move through each stage before progressing to the next level. We can also identify with Rogers’ assertion that in addition to biological needs we also have the desire to grow, develop and seek new challenges and skills. Evaluation Interest has a major part to play – eg if there is no enjoyment we will not apply ourselves. Interest has a major part to play – eg if there is no enjoyment we will not apply ourselves. This shows that we have to motivate ourselves in order to achieve our goal and not be motivated through others.
