1
Plant Kingdom 2: Parts of a Seed Plant Objective 4.01 & 4.02: Analyze the classification of organisms & processes by which organisms accomplish essential life functions.
2
Basic Body Parts Shoot & Root System
3
The Shoot System Is above ground Includes: –Leaves –Buds –Stems –Flowers –Fruits Functions include: –Photosynthesis –Reproduction –Storage –Transport –Hormone Production
4
The Root System Below Ground Includes: –Roots –Tubers –Rhizomes Functions Include: –Anchorage –Absorption –Storage –Transport –Hormone Production
5
Anatomy of a Flowering Plant Petal: Colorful part of a flower that attracts pollinators. Sepal: Small leaves under the flower Stamen: Male Reproductive part that holds pollen. Made up of the Anther & Filament Pistil: Female Reproductive part that receives pollen. Made up of the Stigma, Style, & Ovary
6
Vascular Tissue in Seed Plants 2 types: –Xylem: Transports water –Phloem: Transports food
7
Stems of Seed Plants What are stems made from? –Vascular Tissue (Xylem & Phloem) –Xylem & Phloem run continuously from roots to leaves.
8
Leaves Photosynthesis happens here! Cuticle: Waxy covering that prevents leaves from drying out. Stomata: Openings on the underside of leaves where gas exchange occurs. Guard Cells: Cells in charge of opening and closing the stomata.
10
Transpiration When plants lose water through the stomata. Plants close their stomata to keep from losing water on hot days.
11
Roots in Seed Plants Root Hair: Extensions of the root that increases the surface area to help absorb more water. Lateral Root: A root branch that grows from a tap root.
