Kinds Light –Image illuminated from bottom in most, top in a few. –Magnifies from 4- 1500 times. –Can see individual cells and a few organelles. –First type of scope.

Kinds Electron Microscope –Image illuminated by electrons. –Magnifies up to 500 000 times. –No color - sometimes colorized. Hibiscus Pollen

Kinds Transmission Electron Microscope - electrons pass through thin slice or through individual cells. –Dead cells only because they cannot move. Scanning Electron Microscope - electrons bounced off the surface. –Dead and plated with gold. Scanning Tunneling Electron Microscope - Termite Antenna Endoplasmic R.

Eyepiece - magnifies image and flips it right side up. Body Tube - where image that eyepiece focuses on is.

Light Microscope Parts Arm - Holds lenses above object viewed. Stage Stop - Keeps stage from hitting lenses. Aperture - the hole light comes through.

Light Microscope Parts Objectives - Lenses that magnify image. –Adjustable - each is a different “power” –Sometimes moves up and down to focus image. Stage Clips - Hold slide in place.

Light Microscope Parts Light - Illuminates through object viewed. Stage - what you place your slide or sample on. –Sometimes moves up and down to focus.

Light Microscope Parts Course Adjustment Knob - Moves stage or objectives a lot. Fine Adjustment Knob - Moves a little, close focus.

Light Microscope Parts On/Off Switch - turns light on or off. TURN LIGHT OFF WHEN YOU ARE DONE! Base - heavy to keep scope from slipping around. Diaphragm

Use Both Hands Adjust diaphragm to maximum Slide with specimen in middle of aperture Lowest power, coarse adjustment Higher power, fine adjustment Remove slide, turn to low power, light off. Click image to view movie.
