Some –er verbs have spelling changes in all persons except nous and vous. Most verbs whose second-to-last syllable contains e (no accent) will change the e to è in all forms except nous and vous. amener (to bring (someone)) j’amènenous amenons tu amènesvous amenez il/elle/on amèneils/elles amènent J’amène mon copain à la fête. I’m bringing my friend to the party.

Other verbs like amener: acheter (to buy) emmener (to take (someone))

Verbs that have é in the second-to-last syllable change the é to è in all forms except nous and vous. protéger (to protect) je protègenous protégeons tu protègesvous protégez il/elle/on protègeils/elles protègent Les parents protègent leurs enfants. The parents protect their children.

Verbs like protéger: célébrer (to celebrate) considérer (to consider) espérer (to hope) posséder (to possess, to own) répéter (to repeat)

Verbs that end in –yer change the y to i in all forms except nous and vous. nettoyer (to clean) je nettoienous nettoyons tu nettoiesvous nettoyez il/elle/on nettoieils/elles nettoient Qui nettoie la cuisine? Who cleans the kitchen? C’est ma sœur et moi qui la nettoyons. It’s my sister and I who clean it.

Other verbs like nettoyer: employer (to employ, to use) envoyer (to send) essayer (to try) payer (to pay)

With verbs that end in –ayer, the y to i change is optional. Combien est-ce que tu paies?Je paye dix dollars par mois. How much do you pay? I pay ten dollars per month.
