What are SATs? Statutory Assessment Tasks End of Key Stage 2 All children tested at the same time This is the first year without ‘levels’

What do they test? Maths Arithmetic Reasoning skills English Reading SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) Writing composition is assessed by the teacher.

What are the tests like in English? Reading test (60 minutes). Now takes the form of 3 non- themed, individual tests. Spelling test (approx. 15 mins). 20 spellings/ marks. SPaG test (45 mins). 50 marks. The above are added together to give a SPaG score (out of 70). Over the next few weeks, several writing samples (per child) will be collected and assessed by the teacher to give a writing level. Handwriting is assessed within this.

The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on three passages of text. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test. There will be a selection of question types, including: Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’ Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’ Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’ Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’ Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’

The grammar, punctuation and spelling test will consist of two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes, and a spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes. The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-types of questions: Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the sentence below’ Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’

What are the tests like in mathematics? Arithmetic test – 30 minutes (40 marks) Reasoning 1 – 40 minutes (35 marks) Reasoning 2 – 40 minutes (35 marks) No calculator or tracing paper

How are the children prepared? Learning throughout school Revision/ booster groups Practice questions and papers

Where do the SATs take place? The children will be grouped and will either be in 2E, 2F, the red corridor booths or the staff room. Some children will have readers and they will already know who they are. In the SPaG and maths tests any child can put up their hand to have a question read to them by an adult.

Support homework – especially reading/ spellings and maths Early nights and lots of encouragement! Please avoid holidays or absences between now and SATs week.

What will happen during the week of SATs? Tests taken according to timetable Mornings Breakfast! Monday to Thursday. Everyone as happy as can be before we start Support for children External monitoring of test procedures and invigilation - ‘SATs police’! Afternoon free choice Fun and celebration

What do the results mean? Each pupil registered for the tests will receive: a raw score (number of raw marks awarded) a scaled score (a converted score) confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard Teacher assessment (based on teacher knowledge of child) given along with test result. Show progress of child from KS1 to KS2 Show how well school is doing TAs and results go to secondary schools to inform their planning for year 7.

When and how will results be reported? Tests externally marked Sent back to schools in July Checked in school (e.g. scores add up) Appeals/ numbers crunched Parents receive an end of year written report with both SATs results and TAs
