Take out your books. We will be spirit reading pages 562-565 about the traits and stages of alcoholism.

Traits of an alcoholic they are preoccupied in one way or another with alcohol once they pick up the first drink, they cannot promise or predict what they will say or do or how much they will drink they cannot manage tension without drinking they may have personality changes or memory lapses due to drinking

The class will be divided into 3 or6 groups. Each group will be given one of the 3 stages of Alcoholism. You will label your stage as either Abuse, Dependency, or Addiction. List the characteristics of your Stages of Alcoholism.

Stage One - Abuse Social drinking Relax Relieve stress Depression Necessary to manage stress Physical and psychological dependence develops Intoxicated regularly Memory loss Blackouts Makes excuses Rationalizes drinking behavior Tolerance increases Considered problem drinker by others

Stage Two - Dependency Cannot stop drinking Physically dependent Drink every day Craves drink earlier in the day Physical and mental problems More excuses Others blamed Defensive behavior Denies or hides the problem Tolerance increases Drinking is central event Performances decrease

Stage Three - Addiction More important than anything else No longer denied Uncontrolled Hallucinations Constant companion Aggressive and isolated from friends and family Malnutrition Fallen apart physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially Reverse tolerance Withdrawal symptoms is drinking is ceased Delirium tremens 2/3 of alcoholics recover
