English Modern School Parents Evening

School Times Gates open at 6.45 – before this children will not be allowed on the campus. Arriving after 07.30 children will receive a late slip. School ends at 1:45, please pick up your child on time. Please wait for your child outside Block D. If possible, drop off and collect your child at Gate 2 behind the Block D building.

Curriculum Follow the Cambridge International Primary Programme (CIPP). Literacy follows Lucy Calkins ‘ Reading and Writing Workshop’. Mathematics – using Investigations programme as a main resource. Science – Collins

Maths Curriculum In Investigations your child will: explore problems in depth. find more than one way to solve many of the problems they encounter. reason mathematically and develop problem-solving strategies. examine and explain mathematical thinking and reasoning. represent their thinking using models, diagrams, and graphs. make connections between mathematical ideas.

Curriculum Science – following the CIPP standards. New scheme and textbook this year – Collins International Primary Science Programme Social Studies– integrated into Language Arts lessons as well some stand alone History and Geography Library- One lesson every other week – children may take 2 books ** For more detailed information, please refer to the curriculum maps provided

Homework Description of the work shall be handed out at the beginning of the week. It is important that homework is returned by the end of the week. Look at, read and sign the homework diary nightly. Use it as a method of communication with the teachers. Students should complete the homework on their own. Homework should take about 30 minutes, including a minimum of 20 minutes reading every day.

Reading Role of the parent is to listen and question your child when reading. Encourage the children to read books at home. Take care of the books – encourage children to handle them with respect Each evening your child should read their library book. Make sure to return any EMS stamped books.

Absences Important that children attend school for all designated school days. More than 36 days, the child may not be promoted. On test days - doctor’s certificate required. Any work missed has to be completed

Early Release Must be a valid reason to be released before the scheduled end of the school day. Forms must be completed and signed by the Primary Principal.

Meetings with teachers and Administration Make an appointment Ensure you state the reason for the visit so that the teacher can prepare for it Always begin with the class teacher, then the Assistant Principal If your issue is still unresolved, make an appointment with the Primary Principal

School Uniform Please consult the Handbook for information regarding the school uniform. All children are allocated to a House: Red, Yellow, Green or Blue. Official house shirts should be worn on Wednesdays. Uniforms are available from the Al Muftah Store in Al- Sadd ( across from the Royal Plaza Mall). No deviations will be accepted. Please help us implement our student uniform by ensuring the children come correctly dressed when coming to school. On PE days, children may wear the school PE kit.

Eating and Sleeping It is very important that your children get plenty of sleep to ensure they are able to focus in class. Healthy snacks are very important for the children’s wellbeing. Our school is a nut-free school. Cafeteria services will resume tomorrow. They will be on probation until the end of October.

Assessment Continuous assessment using the work the children do in class and home as a base. Observation of the child’s participation in class activities, group activities and individual activities. Summative assessments at the end of topics. Standardised base line and end line assessment in October and May. Notice will be given of all major assessments.

Textbooks and Stationary Children received their stationary which will remain in class and be distributed as required. Levelled readers in the classroom and Investigations Math programme and Science schemes are the main class textbooks.

School Counsellor A School counsellor knows how to listen and can help children with life's challenges. Counsellors have special training in giving children strategies on how to solve problems, make decisions and stand up for themselves. Counsellors work as a team with students, staff and parents to create a caring community. Birthday Celebrations 2 days advance notice to the teacher. Last 15 minutes of the day. Cup cakes or cookies are only allowed. No party favours or presents. No release of siblings to attend the celebration.
