The Luovre Museum

Where is it? Housed in the Palais du Louvre (Louvre Palace), the former seat of French royalty. The Louvre is located in Paris, France, on the Right Bank of the Seine River in the First Arrondissement (neighborhood).

What is special about it? The museum is special because it is one of the largest museums in the world. Nearly 35,000 objects are exhibited. The Louvre Museum in Paris is laid out into four sections. The heart of the Louvre Museum is the Carosel deLouvre which is where the famous glass pyramid. Twelve paintings from his original collection, including the Vinci's Mona Lisa, Raphaël's Belle Jardinière and Titian's Portrait of François I are among the most important masterpieces of the museum.

What can you see? The Louvre Museum is considered one of the riches museums of the world. It has varied collections that date back to the Egyptian period 5000 BC down to the 19th century. In fact, it does not hold paintings but antiques, sculptures and even graphic arts as well. The collections span the period from remotest antiquity (Sumerians, Egyptians) through the Greek and Roman antiquities, the Middle Age, the Renaissance and ends at about 1850. The Louvre is divided into eight collections.

What can you do? Shopping and Dining at the Louvre: The museum itself features several restaurants and snack bars in addition to a cafeteria: Just below the Pyramid, the restaurant "Le Grand Louvre" offers gourmet specialties in a classic setting. the Cafe Richelieu offers more casual dining possibilities: sandwiches, salads, cold and hot drinks, etc. For books and gifts, head to the Louvre bookshop in the "Hall Napoleon" under the Pyramid. The Carrousel du Louvre is a popular shopping center housed within the Louvre palace. The mezzanine-level "Universal Resto" food court offers 13 gourmet food stalls with delicacies from around the world, including French, Moroccan, Japanese, or Mexican.

When is it open? Open Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, 9 am-6 p.m.; Wednesday and Friday 9 am-10 p.m. Admission is free for all on the first Sunday of each month. The museum is closed Tuesdays and on the following dates: January 1st May 1st May 8th December 25th

How old is it? The Louvre began its career as a royal museum accessible to the public on 10 August 1793, when the doors of the Grande Galerie were opened to the visitors.
