2 For your analysis: note of consideration When discussing Shakespearean sonnets of the 16 th century, or John Donne’s holy sonnets of the 17 th century, it is worthwhile to consider the terms to follow…

3 For your analysis: elaboration in motion Conceit—originally meaning a concept or image, “conceit” came to be the term for figures of speech which establish a striking parallel between two very dissimilar things Metaphysical conceit—a characteristic figure in John Donne and other metaphysical poets of the seventeenth century.

4 For your analysis: the drama of contrast Counterpoint—a musical technique involving the simultaneous sounding of separate musical lines. It is especially prominent in Western music. In all eras, writing of counterpoint has been subject to rules, which sometimes strict. (another technique in art is the sfumato, i.e., vanishing point) Bathos—an abrupt, unintended transition in style from the exalted to the commonplace, producing a ludicrous effect Baroque—the artistic style which employs the classical forms of the Renaissance, but breaks them up and intermingles them to achieve elaborate, grandiose, energetic, and highly dramatic effects

5 For your analysis: wit and words for wonderment Irony—a contrast between expectation and reality. The techniques of irony include exaggeration, understatement, and sarcasm. Dramatic irony—occurs when the reader or viewer knows something that a character does not know. Lyric—poetry in which the speaker (typically the poet) expresses his personal situation, emotion, or conviction.
